In Dining Out

Dos Gringos in Scottsdale was like a second home to me in my younger years – I loved the place and spent countless happy hours and late nights on the patio, chilling in the casual vibe. Fast forward to present day and a few things have changed – the name for one is now Old Town Gringos (and I am too old to be found anywhere late at night).

The patio is still amazing, open and great for enjoying a relaxed vibe in the heart of old town Scottsdale. The drinks are great but the food is fabulous, still recognizable as friendly pub fare, but taken up a few notches.

Check it out!

The O.P.P. (Other People’s Pretzels) is a fun take on the ubiquitous pub staple. It’s more like a cross between a soft pretzel and a charcuterie board. A tray is laden with slices of perfectly slated, soft pretzel slices, a trio of dipping sauces, hot cauliflower, pickles and a mound of BACON!!! The combination of nibbles found on the tray is unexpected and so satisfying. You get salty, sweet, tangy, sour, smoky, and meaty in a variety of textures. You can build tiny pretzel sandwiches, and dip, dunk and pop to your belly is busting. This is such a fun, sharable appetizer.

Another great sharable menu item at OTG is the Queso Dip. This ain’t no ordinary cheese dip – it’s laden with Hatch green chilies (Chef Willie Nelson hails from New Mexico so you will find a green chili theme on the menu), pico de gallo and topped with a savory green chili pork with a nice kick. This is one incredible queso dip worth a visit alone.

They are offering some pretty tasty entrees as well. On a recent visit I sampled the Blackened Grilled Shrimp Tacos and Slow Roasted BBQ Pork Sliders. Both had delicious merit, the shrimp was perfectly spiced and stuffed into a soft flour tortilla with a jicama slaw for texture and the sliders were piled high with a sweet and tangy shredded pork, the sweet/spicy addition of the pineapple pico de gallo made it memorable and addictive.

If there is room, and there should ALWAYS be room for dessert, order the Skillet Cookie. I enjoyed the white choclate macadamia nut version and it did not disappoint, freshly baked cookie with crispy edges and a gooey center with a giant scoop of ice cream melting on top – how could you go wrong?

Make Old Town Gringos a stop on your next night out, Scottsdale pub crawl or weekend day drinking excursion. The patio is fabulous, the drinks good and the food will keep you very happy!
