I love to experiment in the kitchen and this Buñuelo Tiramisu makes it to the top of my lest of one of the best things I have ever created. It is made with My Nana’s Best Tasting Buñuelos and is absolutely delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. It’s also a showstopper dessert presented in a trifle dish with the beautiful layers on display. And it’s pretty easy to make and assemble too.

Buñuelo Tiramisu

Ingredients

• 6 My Nana’s Buñuelos (5 for the layers, 1 crushed for topping)
• 2 Cups Strong Black Coffee
• 3 Tbs Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (separate 1 tbs for topping)
• 1 pint heavy whipping cream
• 1 tub mascarpone cheese
• 1 heaping tablespoon granulated sugar
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 dark chocolate bar, finely chopped for topping

Directions:

1. Whip together the heavy cream, mascarpone cheese, vanilla and sugar until soft peaks form.
2. Mix together the coffee and tablespoons of the cocoa powder in s large shallow dish.
3. Soak one of the buñuelos in the coffee for a minute on each side. Then place on the bottom of the trifle dish.
4. Spread a layer of the cream on the coffee soaked buñuelo. Keep alternating the layers ending with the cream.
5. Crush the remaining buñuelo in a ziplock bag and mix with 1 tablespoon of the cocoa powder and the chocolate chunks. Sprinkle a generous layer of this mixture on the top of the tiramisu.
6. Chill for 2 hours and serve.

Francine is a newer dining concept that opened up in the luxury wing of Scottsdale Fashion Square over the summer. They offer French Mediterranean cuisine in a beautiful setting. For the past couple weeks I’ve seen picture of the gorgeous space and have been excited to plan a visit.

Then I discovered they just rolled out a new brunch menu and that excitement tripled. The offerings take brunch classics and elevate them to sublime.

I recently visited Francine and was blown away by the beauty of the interior. The space was bright and felt very open. Warm tones set the charming and refined vibe. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a gorgeous bar area, beautifully lit and welcoming.

They’re mixing up the usual brunch cocktails like mimosas and Bloody Marys and also a bevy of signature and classic cocktails.

During our visit we tried the Summer Cantaloupe and the Ah Oui Oui cocktails. Both were beautifully presented. The Summer Cantaloupe was light and refreshing, made with Pisco, St. George Basil, ginger, cantaloupe, lime and sparkling wine. It was lightly sweet and bubbly. A winner for sure. The Ah Oui Oui is made with Early Grey tea infused rum, St. George Pear, lustau amontillado passion fruit, pineapple and lemon. Both cocktails were as pretty as they were tasty, perfect to pair with brunch.

While we sipped our cocktails we noshed on the stunning Grilled Octopus appetizer. The octopus was perfection, expertly cooked and super tender. It was served with a savory spiced chorizo verde and bright romesco sauce. Our server said the Grilled Octopus was Francine’s most popular dish and it is no wonder why!

For our entree we opted for the Croque Madame, a sinfully decadent and rich French favorite. A sandwich made with a fried egg, ham, gruyere cheese, and creamy béchamel. At Francine you have the opportunity to add table side raclette to the already rich and filling sandwich; and while the option is truly gilding the lily, I highly recommend it! I don’t know of any other places in town that offer raclette and it’s a sublime experience to have your server scrape oozing, melty cheese onto your food, cheese makes everything better after all . YUM!!!

No brunch is complete without a sweet component and we satisfied that rule with the Lemon Ricotta Pancake. This pancake was HUGE and can easily be shared by a few people. Don’t miss it because it’s also wildly delicious. It’s more like a cake than a traditional pancake and it’s bright with the taste of lemon and sweetened with blueberry compote. It comes served with chantilly cream and maple syrup. It served as dessert and left us satisfied and happy.

As one of Scottsdale’s new premier eateries Francine offers something for everybody. It’s upscale but relaxed and comfortable. The brunch menu is perfect for a leisurely weekend morning spent with friends. It feels a little fancy and that’s what makes a dining experience there so special. Check it out and see for yourself, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Admittedly I am a bit of a germaphobe and hypochondriac. Before covid was even a thing I packed my own baggies of disinfecting wipes and a small spray bottle of alcohol in my purse. Halloween is my family’s most favorite holiday. We love it more than Christmas, even Jax does. The decorations, the candy, the cooler temps, the excitement and the costumes! Oh, the costumes. Growing up I always dreaded when summer ended and school started. The only thing that eased the anxiety was shopping for new school clothes, a backpack and shoes. My new wardrobe and accessories gave me a little boost of confidence and made the transition back to school a little easier.

I recently turned 40 and with that monumental birthday came a bevvy of insecurities about entering a knew decade. The number seemed daunting to me and where I was comfortable with my appearance before I suddenly became self-conscious about the tell-tale signs of aging – abundance of greys in my hair, crows feet and wrinkles in my forehead – ugh! Thankfully my smile still shines bright because of Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening System.

Honestly, I never thought my teeth needed whitening until I started using Smile Brilliant and saw results. I don’t smoke or drink coffee and I brush with a baking soda toothpaste 2-3 times a day so my teeth appeared pretty white. But evidently age yellowed my pearly whites and after only three applications I saw obvious results.

My experience with Smile Brilliant was fantastic. I was sent the whitening kit which includes all that you need to get you on your way to a dazzling smile.

To get started I had to make impressions of my teeth. The kit includes a base and a catalyst paste to make the putty along with step-by-step instructions on how to get perfect impressions. At first I was a little intimidated but the directions are clear and concise and if you have questions you can call or chat with a Smile Brilliant teammate for support. You can even send in photos of your impressions to get approval before sending them in.

It was a smooth and seamless process and I received my trays within a couple days. I was a bit worried because I have very small, gapped teeth and a pretty pronounced overbite but since the trays were custom-made from the molds I made the fit was snug and perfect.

Smile Brilliant recommends the whitening process be done at night when settling down for the evening. This is because you aren’t supposed to eat or drink anything afterwards so going to bed after completing the whitening is best.

The nightly whitening process was easy. After brushing I put a small ribbon of whitening gel along the front of each tray (top and bottom) and fitted the trays onto my teeth. You need to leave the trays in for anywhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours. I started off at 30 minutes and by the time I completed 10 days of whitening I was leaving them in for over an hour.

The whitening gel can cause some gum irritation so it is important to follow the instructions carefully and not use too much gel. I did experience some minor uncomfortable tingling a few nights in so I discontinued use for the evening and started again the next night. It may be helpful to rub some coconut oil on your gums before starting to create a barrier between your gums and the gel. That is just one of the tips I learned from the helpful folks at Smile Brilliant.

After the whitening gel you brush and then use the desensitizing gel which hydrates the teeth, helps prevent tooth sensitivity and protects the teeth from re-staining. The desensitizing gel stays on the teeth for up to 15 minutes and then the process is done.

Like I said I saw visible results within only three days of starting the system. After 10 days my teeth were shiny, white and brilliant. I truly had no idea my teeth needed some brightening but they certainly did and now I have a dazzling smile.

Now I can smile my way through 40 (after I get my greys dyed and maybe some botox) with pride and confidence.

The facial started with a gentle cleansing to ride my face, neck and décolletage of surface impurities. A few masks were applied, fortified with  vitamins and nutrients to feed, repair and nourish my skin. Steam was used to help open up my pores so they could get maximum benefit of the products used. The mermaid facial also includes a microderm treatment to slough away dead skin cells, dirt and impurities leaving behind radiant skin. Bed time is story time at our house and it can be a struggle. Some nights Jax would rather watch a show on her iPad, which we are working hard to minimize by enticing her with fun stories and books. The plan is working. Every night Jax has the responsibility of picking out the book she wants as part of her nightly routine. It’s usually the same two books over and over so I am always on the look out for new books to keep her engaged.

Enter Up Up Up by Phoebe Fox, a silly tale about a group of animal friends piling in to an elevator to get to a party at the top of their building. The story is told mostly through illustrations and simple words making this a great book for preschool children.  Jax got a kick out of anticipating which animal would be up next. This would be a fantastic book for a really young child learning animal sounds.

Kudos to illustrator, Michael Hale for the stunning, hand drawn images that give the pages a classic, almost vintage look. The details on the page keep Jax mesmerized and we enjoy playing a rendition of “I spy” with every page turned.

I was pleased to find out that the ProlifeStream system doesn’t involve fasting or dieting of any kind. I simply prepared myself a shake each day but adding a pea protein packet and a packet of probiotics to 12 ounces of water and shook it up to blend. Easy!

Now I will be honest…I did not love the taste in the beginning. It wasn’t anything too horrible but it was a bit grassy tasting. I simply drank it down fast and reminded myself that I was doing something great for my health. After a couple days the taste no longer phased me and I actually enjoyed it. I often used it as a meal replacement, drinking it in the morning to start my day. A few times I drank it at night. I found the drink to be filling and satisfying holding me over until the next meal or curbing any snack cravings.

Within a few days I noticed a difference in my regularity (TMI – I know). My gall bladder was removed when I was a teenager so my digestive tract is sluggish and constipation is pretty common for me (the TMI continues) but I immediately noticed a difference. Because of this I lost three pounds in the first week, without any dieting or increase of daily exercise; I also felt like I had more energy throughout the day.

Another immediate result I saw was a change in my complexion. I have always had decent skin, but when I do get a breakout, it’s the cystic kind, often brought on by stress. When I started the detox I was battling two large zits on the side of my face. They had been there for at least a month and they weren’t shrinking. I was debating on seeing my doctor and having him check them out. But after a few days of ProlifeStream I noticed they had disappeared and my overall complexion brightened a bit.

I finished the program over a week ago and I still feel the renewed energy and I haven’t had any of my “normal” GI complaints so I have to say I found ProlifeStream to be extremely successful.

It was ideal to shake up the drink before I headed out for the day and enjoy it while on the go. There is zero inconvenience while on the system making it ideal for busy moms, dads, students, pretty much anyone.
