In Dining Out, Family Time

As the mother of a young child, early literacy is very important to me, and that is why I was thrilled to jump on board the Grow A Reader project with Southwest Human Development.

In my initial call with the folks from SWHD I learned some shocking (and heartbreaking) facts about children and literacy in low-income comm. One that stood out the most is THREE out every FIVE children in low-income families do not have a single book to call their own. Not one book! Their parents have to use financial resources towards, rent, food, bills, etc.

Something so many of us take for granted (Jax had a full library before she was even born) is considered a luxury for so many. Statistics show that when kids don’t have access to early literacy materials, they are more likely to face challenges in school as they enter school and prepare for their education.

In a nutshell — books and early literacy are paramount to lifetime success!

Through the end of May the Grow A Reader virtual book drive is making it easy for YOU to plant a seed needed to help a child develop a lifelong love of reading. Participating in this program can CHANGE LIVES!!
