In Dining Out

One of my favorite types of food is Mediterranean so I was so excited when Kovo Modern Mediterranean opened a few months ago in North Phoenix. The space is fresh and bright with a chic hip vibe and they are serving up some fresh and bright Mediterranean fare to match.

The hallmark of a great Mediterranean joint is great hummus. Kovo’s is fabulous. Creamy smooth and kissed with a hint of garlic and olive oil. It’s available on it’s own served with soft pita triangles, cukes and carrots or you can get it as part of the Dip Trio accompanied by tzatziki, and Crazy Feta dip. The tzatziki is tangy and creamy and the Crazy Feta is to die for, whipped feta cheese with a touch a spice – so good!

Also not to be missed is Kovo’s Calamari. It’s crisp and tender, expertly cooked and brightened with capers and bits of feta cheese. The addition of fried artichokes and pepperoncini is most welcomed, making the appetizer robust and plentiful for sharing.

Like great hummus I also judge a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant on their gyro. I love great gyro. At Kovo you will find gyro on the Mezze Platter or for a smaller appetite you can get it in a pita. I opted for the latter and it was amazing. The pita is loaded with shaved savory gyro meat, tomato, red onion and that awesome tzatziki. The pita comes with a Greek salad or fries.

Kovo also has some killer entrees, like pastas, fresh salads, burgers, sandwiches and a few tasty pizzas. I tried the Pizza Blanca and loved it.

A thin crust is brushed with olive oil, garlic and herbs and loaded with mozzarella cheese and caramelized onions then finished with roasted pistachios and baby arugula. It was basically an awesome salad on a perfectly chewy crust.

Kovo also offers a weekend brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.  The brunch menu features 10 exclusive items like shaksuka, a quintessential Moroccan dish with spiced tomato ragout topped with poached eggs and a Greek twist on the brunch staple – the Spanakopita Benedict, puffed pastry filled with cheese and spinach topped with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce, served with rosemary potatoes! How awesome does that sound?!

Kovo aims to please with their hip ambiance and fresh take on Mediterranean classics. The staff is friendly and the food is awesome. A visit to this chic eatery should definitely be on your agenda for lunch, dinner or brunch!

Kovo Modern Mediterranean is located at 10625 N. Tatum Boulevard, Phoenix, 85028.
