Del Real Party Box – Ole!

My maiden name is Vargas and I am Arizona born and bred, so it’s safe to say I know good Mexican food. I was raised on it. A pot of soupy pinto beans, seasoned to perfection, was a staple in my family’s home; and I still dream of my mom’s homemade tortillas, fresh off her cast iron comal. Tacos, tamales, enchiladas, burros, mole, beans and rice – it’s the food that added spice to my childhood.

I still love it to this day but I am a sucker for convenience and rather than slaving away creating the perfect Mexican dinner, I find myself ordering take-out tacos!

Muchos gracias, Del Real Foods for entering my life!

Del Real Foods is the perfect answer to all my Mexican cravings. A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to receive a Del Real Foods Party Box and a fiesta followed. I chose to sample the Barbacoa, Carnitas, Chicken Tamales, Al Pastor Taco Kit and Al Pastor Papusas for this review.

I have to say that I was not disappointed with anything I tried and actually went out and purchased a few other items just to try them out! Everything was delicious and I was able to have an authentic Mexican dinner on the table within mere minutes. It was as easy as opening the package and pushing the buttons on the microwave. Tasty and simple, my idea of dinner –  muy sabroso!

Barbacoa – Saucy and deliciously spiced beef with a bit of a kick! Perfect for tacos and burros. I used the leftovers to make a tasty taco salad the next day.

Carnitas – One of my favorite Mexican specialties. I make my husband take me to San Diego several times a year just to stuff myself with this porky goodness at a SoCal dive not far from the beach. Now I can fill the void between trips! Del Real’s version is fried pork chunks seasoned to perfection.

Chicken Tamales – Good tamales are a labor of love and because of that labor my family is only treated to them during the Christmas holiday season. As per tradition my family gets together and makes hundreds of tamales. We make enough to gorge on, to serve at family gatherings and to give as gifts. I like to tuck some in the freezer to prolong the goodness and when that last tamale is gone I weep a bit. The yumminess of these tamales means I can enjoy this delicacy all year long and without the fuss of making them! They were moist, generously filled with tasty chicken and reminded me of Christmas Eve at my abuelita’s house.

Al Pastor Taco Kit – This kit is amazing and the El Pastor products were my favorite of all the Del Real products I tried. The kit comes complete with corn tortillas, spiced pork cubes in a delicious sauce, and rojo salsa – enough to make 20 generously filled tacos! I set up a little taco bar with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream and my bestie and I feasted. All that was missing was a cold cerveza!

Al Pastor Papusas – Te’queiro papusas! I know them as an El Salvadoran specialty and in a city packed with Mexican restaurants Salvadoran cuisine is not easy to come by. They are akin to a tamale in that a corn masa outer shell encases a savory filling but instead of steamed in a husk, these disk shaped glories are griddled like a tortilla, giving them a slightly crisp outer layer with a pillowy inside full of delicious filling. They are divine and Del Real’s version did not disappoint.
